The snow is whiter on the South of the main Alpine ridge. Seriously, every East- or South Tyrolean and every Carinthian will confirm this with full conviction. The snow clouds bring their load fresh and white directly from the nearby Mediterranean to the Tauern main ridge, where the Katschberg tourist region lies on the border between Salzburg and Carinthia. You can feel that you are at the sunny side of the Alps from the many hours of sunshine and also from the southern attitude towards life, which makes holidays so relaxed, especially for families with children.
In winter the Katschberg family region is well prepared for the young guests and their adult companions. The parents enjoy skiing pleasure on 70 km of slopes which can be 100% covered in artificial snow. Meanwhile your children are at Katschi's children world and try their first turns under the expert supervision of the ski instructors. Talking cartoon characters along the slopes reserved for children cheer the kids up as they drive through, the mini-jet, a child-friendly pommel lift, brings them back to the start. If the little ones need a break in between, they can rest and warm up in the warm-pavilions.
The wide, clear slopes at the skiing area Katschberg are medium difficult for the most part, a treat for the experts is the Direttissima at Aineck, for less experienced skiers there are 10 km of easy slopes. The ski mountains Aineck and Tschaneck are connected through a ski bridge with conveyor system. Ski huts with their sunny terraces invite you to take a leisurely ski break and a hearty refreshment.
Those who move into their accomodations at Katschberghöhe live directly on the piste, the rule is “ski in, ski out”: go to the door, strap on your skis and then you start. From Rennweg, 6 km away, a free ski bus takes guests to the ski area in ten minutes. Ski equipment can be stored in heated ski depots that are locked at night. Family-friendly accommodations can be found at Katschberghöhe in several 4-star-hotels as well as in holiday apartments, huts and chalets or in family-run guest houses, inns and holiday apartments in Rennweg and the surrounding area. Many hotels have generous wellness-areas and are specially equipped towards the needs of families with children: childcare, facilities and menus for children.
You can explore the snow-covered mountains in a romantic way on guided snowshoe hikes and 30 km of winter hiking trails. The goal often is a rustic alpine hut, where you can stop for a hearty snack or a cozy hut evening. An 8 km long cross-country trail at the Pöllatal with its amazing landscape offers refreshment opportunities. Tobogganing trips, ice skating and horse-drawn carriage rides are popular for parents and children. If you have a horse girl in the family, you can make her happy with a visit to the Katschberg Alpine Horse Center.
